Can Indian and other international students study in Germany? Yes. Germany admits international students to Bachelor’s, Master’s, medicine and vocational programmes, and most public universities charge no tuition fees. You need a school or university qualification that Germany accepts for your chosen course, proof of language ability (German or English, depending on the programme), proof that you can fund your living costs (currently EUR 11,904 a year in a blocked account), health insurance and a student visa.

Who Can Study in Germany? Eligibility at a Glance
Admission depends on whether your school or degree certificate counts as a university entrance qualification (Hochschulzugangsberechtigung) in Germany.
Whether your certificate is accepted is decided by each university, usually with reference to the anabin database and the DAAD admission database. A low GPA does not automatically rule you out – see our guide to universities that accept a lower GPA.
Which Programme Is Right for You?

What Does It Cost to Study in Germany in 2026?
Tuition is free at most public universities; living costs and a few fixed charges are what you actually budget for.

Language Requirements: German or English?
English-taught programmes
Most English-taught Master’s ask for IELTS (commonly 6.5) or TOEFL iBT (commonly around 90). Some universities accept English-medium-of-instruction certificates instead – see studying without IELTS or TOEFL.
German-taught programmes
Usually C1-level proof such as TestDaF (TDN 4 in all parts), DSH-2 or telc C1 Hochschule. Medicine and dentistry are taught in German, so plan for C1 before you start.

Timing matters: the winter semester (October start) is the main intake, with many deadlines around 15 July for international applicants and earlier for some courses; the summer semester (April start) usually has deadlines around 15 January. Check our application timeline.

Student Visa, Part-Time Work and Staying After Graduation
Student visa
Apply for a national (D) student visa at the German mission in your country with your admission letter, blocked-account confirmation, health insurance and APS certificate (for Indian applicants). Processing times vary by mission.
Working while you study
International students may work 140 full days or 280 half days per year (Section 16b of the Residence Act, since March 2024). Student jobs typically pay at least the statutory minimum wage of EUR 13.90 per hour (2026).
After graduation
Graduates of a German university can apply for a residence permit of up to 18 months to look for a job that matches their degree, and can later move to a skilled-worker permit or EU Blue Card. See Work in Germany.
