OT Technician Salary in Germany (2026): What You Really Earn Per Month
Gross and net monthly pay for operation theatre technicians (OTA) in Germany – during the paid 3-year training and after qualification – with the 2026 public-hospital pay tables, a rupee comparison and the recognition route for Indian OT technicians.
Quick answer: in Germany the operation theatre technician is called an Operationstechnische Assistentin / Operationstechnischer Assistent (OTA). In public hospitals that pay by the TVoeD collective agreement, a newly qualified OTA usually starts at around EUR 3,510 gross per month (pay group P 7, step 2, from 1 May 2026) and moves up to about EUR 4,300 with experience – before shift and weekend extras. During the 3-year OTA training you are already paid EUR 1,490 to EUR 1,653 a month.
Private hospital chains and clinics have their own pay scales, so offers can be lower or higher. This guide shows the official 2026 figures first, then explains net pay, the rupee value, what changes for Indian OT technicians and how to reach a salary like this from India.
OT Technician Salary in Germany at a Glance (2026)
Public-hospital figures, gross per month, from the 2026 collective-agreement tables.
The figures below are basic salaries. Night, Sunday and public-holiday work, on-call duty (Bereitschaftsdienst) and the annual special payment (Jahressonderzahlung) come on top, which is why many OTAs in busy surgical departments earn noticeably more than the table value. Figures for TVoeD-P apply from 1 May 2026 to 31 March 2027.
Why salary websites show lower numbers
Many portals mix private clinics, part-time jobs and old data from before the 2025-2026 pay rises. That is why you will see figures like EUR 2,500-3,000 online. For a full-time OTA in a public hospital in 2026 the collective-agreement table above is the more reliable reference.
Net Salary: What Reaches Your Bank Account
German gross pay is reduced by income tax and social insurance – roughly a third for a single person.
For a single person in tax class I without church tax, gross pay of about EUR 3,510 usually leaves around EUR 2,300 to 2,400 net per month. Social insurance (pension, health, care and unemployment) takes about 20-21% of gross, and income tax the rest of the difference. Married employees whose spouse earns less, or who has no income, can pay less tax with tax class III.
Net pay rises with each pay step and with shift extras. Night, Sunday and holiday supplements are partly tax-free in Germany, so they increase take-home pay more than the same amount of basic salary.
Typical monthly costs to plan for
Rent for a shared flat or a small apartment in a mid-sized city often costs EUR 500-900 a month, more in Munich, Frankfurt or Hamburg. Many hospitals help international staff find their first accommodation, sometimes in staff housing. Health insurance is already deducted from your salary.

An illustrative conversion – check the live exchange rate before you compare offers.
Converting is useful for motivation, but compare savings, not gross pay: living costs in Germany are much higher than in India. A single OTA who shares a flat and lives carefully can usually save part of the net salary each month, especially once shift extras are added.

Two Routes to an OTA Salary for Indian Candidates
Either get your Indian OT qualification recognised, or train as an OTA in Germany and get paid while you learn.
Route 1: recognition of your Indian OT technology qualification
OTA is a regulated profession under the ATA-OTA Act (in force since 1 January 2022). If you hold a diploma or B.Sc. in operation theatre technology, the competent authority of the German state where you want to work compares your training with the German 3-year OTA training. Where it finds differences, you receive a deficit notice (Defizitbescheid) and close the gaps through an adaptation period or a knowledge test. Until full recognition you may work as an assistant with a lower salary. Most employers and authorities expect German at B1-B2 level.
Route 2: the 3-year OTA training (Ausbildung) in Germany
If your qualification is far from the German standard, or you have Class 12 only, the paid OTA training is often the cleaner route. You study at a school and work in the hospital, earning EUR 1,490-1,653 a month in public hospitals, and finish with a German state exam – no recognition process needed afterwards. You usually need B1-B2 German and Class 12 (or equivalent). See our Ausbildung in Germany guide.
Which visa applies
Training uses the vocational training visa; the recognition route uses the visa for recognition measures; once recognised, you work on a skilled-worker residence permit. OTAs without a university degree normally do not use the EU Blue Card (its 2026 salary thresholds are EUR 50,700 and EUR 45,934.20 a year). Our Germany visa process guide explains the steps.
What Increases an OT Technician’s Salary in Germany
Pay steps are automatic; the rest depends on shifts, employer and further training.
Pay steps: under TVoeD-P you move up the steps with years of service – from EUR 3,510 to about EUR 4,305 in P 7.
Shift and on-call extras: night, weekend and holiday work, and on-call duty in surgery, add a significant amount.
Employer type: public and church hospitals usually pay by collective agreement; private clinics vary – always ask which agreement applies.
Specialisation: cardiac, neuro, trauma or transplant theatres and central sterile services leadership can lead to higher pay groups.
Further training: courses such as practical instructor (Praxisanleitung) or OR management open senior roles.
Location: pay tables are the same nationwide in public hospitals, but living costs are not – a mid-sized city often leaves more savings than Munich.
Anaesthesia Technician (ATA) Salary Compared
ATA and OTA were regulated together and are paid on the same scales in public hospitals.
The Anaesthesia Technical Assistant (Anaesthesietechnische Assistenz, ATA) training was regulated in the same law as OTA, lasts 3 years and receives the same training pay (EUR 1,490-1,653 in 2026 in public hospitals). After qualifying, ATAs are paid on the same TVoeD-P pay groups as OTAs. Read more on our anaesthesia technician jobs page.
