Carpenter Salary in Germany (2026): What Tischler and Zimmerer Earn Per Month
Real 2026 pay for carpenters and joiners in Germany – collective-agreement tables by region, Tischler vs Zimmerer pay, apprentice pay, net salary and the rupee value – plus the routes for Indian carpenters.
Quick answer: a qualified carpenter (joiner, Tischler / Schreiner) in Germany usually earns about EUR 2,800 to EUR 3,500 gross per month in 2026, depending on the region and years of experience. Construction carpenters (Zimmerer), who build roofs and timber frames, are paid on the higher construction scale: about EUR 4,150 gross for a skilled worker where the agreement applies. After tax and social insurance a single person keeps roughly EUR 1,950 to EUR 2,700 net – about INR 2.1 to 3 lakh a month.
Apprentices are paid too: EUR 760 to EUR 1,000 a month in year 1, rising each year. This guide uses the official 2026 collective-agreement tables first, then explains net pay, the rupee value and how an Indian carpenter can reach these salaries.
Carpenter Salary in Germany at a Glance (2026)
Gross monthly pay, full time. Collective-agreement (Tarif) figures unless marked otherwise.
Salary portals often show lower averages (for example about EUR 2,500 at entry level and about EUR 3,200 after 3-5 years) because they include small workshops that do not pay by collective agreement, part-time jobs and older data. Always ask an employer whether it is tarifgebunden (bound by the agreement) – it is the single biggest factor in your pay.
Tischler Salary by Region: the 2026 Pay Tables
Joinery pay is negotiated region by region between IG Metall and the trade associations.
Hourly rates are converted at a 38-39 hour week. Your exact group depends on your qualification, experience and the work you do – CNC joinery, furniture design or site management are grouped higher than simple assembly. A new agreement for Hessen and Rheinland-Pfalz (September 2026) raises pay again from February 2027.
Tischler, Schreiner, Zimmerer – what is the difference?
Tischler (north) and Schreiner (south) are the same trade: furniture, windows, doors, kitchens and interior fit-out, paid by the joinery agreements above. Zimmerer are construction carpenters who build roof structures and timber-frame houses and are paid by the construction agreement. See our Tischler vs Schreiner vs Zimmermann guide.
Zimmerer (Roof and Timber-Frame Carpenter) Salary
Zimmerer belong to the main construction industry (Bauhauptgewerbe) and earn the most among carpenters.
From 1 April 2026 the construction agreement pays a skilled worker (wage group 3) a total hourly wage of EUR 23.97 and wage group 4 EUR 26.05 (both including the 5.9% construction supplement). At a 40-hour week that is roughly EUR 4,150 and EUR 4,500 gross a month. Since April 2026 the same rates apply in eastern and western Germany.
Zimmerer apprentices also earn more than joinery apprentices: the national average in the BIBB collective-pay database was EUR 1,070 / 1,281 / 1,527 in years 1-3 (October 2025), and rose again in April 2026. Outdoor work, travel to building sites and seasonal peaks often add overtime pay.

Net Salary: What a Carpenter Takes Home
Approximate net pay for a single person, tax class I, no church tax (2026).
Social insurance (pension, health, care and unemployment) takes about 20-21% of gross pay and income tax the rest of the difference. Married employees whose spouse earns little or nothing can take home more with tax class III. Rent for a shared flat or small apartment in a mid-sized city is often EUR 500-900 a month, more in Munich, Stuttgart or Frankfurt.
Carpenter Salary in Germany in Indian Rupees
Converted at about EUR 1 = INR 110 (September 2026 mid-rate) – check the live rate before comparing offers.
Compare savings, not gross pay: costs in Germany are far higher than in India. A single carpenter who shares a flat can usually save part of the net salary every month, especially with overtime.
How Indian Carpenters Can Reach These Salaries
Three realistic routes – which one fits depends on your certificate, experience and German level.
Route 1: recognition of your ITI or diploma, then the skilled-worker visa
If you hold an ITI carpenter or wood-working certificate, the Handwerkskammer (chamber of crafts) compares it with the German Tischler or Zimmerer qualification. With full recognition and a job offer you can apply for the skilled-worker visa. Partial recognition can be completed in Germany through an adaptation programme.
Route 2: the experience-based route
Since 2024, experienced workers with a state-recognised qualification (at least two years of training) and at least two years of work experience in the last five years can come without prior recognition – if the job pays at least EUR 45,630 a year in 2026 or the employer is bound by a collective agreement. Check the current rules on the official Make it in Germany portal.
Route 3: a paid Ausbildung as Tischler or Zimmerer
If you are younger or have no formal certificate, the 3-year dual training is the cleanest route: you are paid from day one and finish with a German qualification every employer recognises. Most workshops expect B1 German. Read our carpenter Ausbildung guide.
What about the EU Blue Card or Opportunity Card?
The Blue Card needs a university degree, so carpenters normally use the skilled-worker visa. The Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) can let you look for a job in Germany for up to a year if you meet its points criteria.
What Increases a Carpenter’s Salary in Germany
Region, employer and further training matter more than the job title.
Collective agreement: a tarifgebunden employer pays the table rates plus holiday and Christmas money in most regions.
Trade: Zimmerer on the construction scale earn clearly more than joiners in small workshops.
Region: Hessen, Baden-Wuerttemberg and Bayern pay above the east and the north for joinery.
Skills: CNC joinery, CAD/CAM, stair building and shopfitting lead to higher pay groups.
Meister: the master craftsman qualification opens foreman roles (EUR 3,700-5,600+) and your own workshop.
German level: B1-B2 German is needed for recognition, training and promotion to site lead.

Yes – after the Handwerkskammer recognises an ITI or similar qualification, through the experience-based route with at least two years of experience, or by completing a paid Ausbildung in Germany. B1 German is usually required.
Yes. Germany has a shortage of skilled craftspeople, carpenters are paid under collective agreements in many regions, and the Meister qualification allows you to become a foreman or open your own workshop.
