Quick answer: German universities usually convert foreign grades with the modified Bavarian formula: German grade = 1 + 3 × (Nmax − Nd) / (Nmax − Nmin), where Nmax is the best possible grade in your system, Nmin the lowest pass grade and Nd your grade. On a 10-point CGPA scale with a pass mark of 4.0, an 8.0 CGPA becomes 2.0 and a 7.0 becomes 2.5. In Germany 1.0 is the best grade and 4.0 the lowest pass, so a smaller number is better.

The formula is simple; the part most students get wrong is the pass mark. Your converted grade depends heavily on the Nmin your university or uni-assist uses, which is why two calculators can give you two different answers for the same CGPA. This guide shows both common cases side by side, so you know the realistic range before you shortlist programmes. If your result is weaker than you hoped, our guide to German universities that accept a lower GPA is the natural next read.

The German Grading Scale in One Table

Everything in Germany runs from 1.0 (best) to 4.0 (pass). Above 4.0 is a fail.

When a programme writes “minimum grade 2.5”, it means 2.5 or better – so a converted 2.3 qualifies and a 2.7 does not. This inversion is the single most common source of confusion for Indian applicants used to “higher is better”.

The Modified Bavarian Formula, Explained

German grade = 1 + 3 × (Nmax − Nd) / (Nmax − Nmin)

What each value means

Nmax is the best grade possible in your system (10 on a 10-point CGPA scale, 100 for percentages). Nmin is the lowest grade that still counts as a pass – not the lowest number on the scale. Nd is your own grade. The formula maps your position between pass and top mark onto the German 4.0-to-1.0 range.

Who uses it

The formula is the conversion method recommended by Germany’s Standing Conference of Education Ministers (KMK). Universities and uni-assist take the Nmax and Nmin for each country and institution from the official anabin database. The University of Oldenburg, for example, publishes exactly this formula and notes that where values are ambiguous it uses the one that gives the more favourable result for the student. Some universities, especially those that assess applications themselves, use their own tables or scoring systems instead – always check the programme’s admission regulations.

Worked example

CGPA 7.8 on a 10-point scale, pass mark 4.0: 1 + 3 × (10 − 7.8) / (10 − 4) = 1 + 3 × 2.2 / 6 = 1 + 1.1 = 2.1. With a pass mark of 5.0 instead: 1 + 3 × 2.2 / 5 = 2.32, so about 2.3. Same student, noticeably different grade.

For percentages use Nmax 100 and the pass mark printed on your marksheet (often 35 or 40). The result is an estimate for planning; the university or uni-assist decides the official value.

Conversion Table: 10-Point CGPA

Two columns because Indian universities use different pass marks. Check the pass mark printed on your grade card or ordinance.

Values are rounded to one decimal place for readability; universities differ in whether they round or cut off after the first decimal, which can move a borderline result by 0.1.

Conversion Table: Percentage

For marks given as percentages (Nmax = 100). Common Indian pass marks are 40% and 35%.

Do not convert your CGPA into a percentage with a multiplier (such as 9.5) and then run the formula on the percentage - that mixes two different scales and usually gives a different answer from the one the university will calculate. Use the scale that appears on your final transcript. If your university issues an official CGPA-to-percentage certificate, include it; whether the German university uses it is the university’s decision.

What Grade Do German Master’s Programmes Expect?

There is no national cut-off. Each programme sets its own rule.

Programmes with a stated minimum

Some programmes publish a minimum such as 2.5 or 3.0 on the German scale. If your converted grade is worse than the published minimum, the application is normally rejected at the formal check, however strong the rest of your profile.

Programmes that rank applicants

Competitive programmes often use an aptitude assessment (Eignungsfeststellung) in which the grade is one weighted factor alongside subject fit, test scores, motivation and work experience. A 2.4 can be admitted where a 2.0 is rejected if the subject match is better.

Programmes with only a pass requirement

Many Master’s programmes, especially at universities of applied sciences, mainly require a relevant Bachelor’s with enough credits in core subjects. Here the converted grade matters far less than the curriculum match - which is why a modest CGPA is not the end of the road. Our list of tuition-free public universities is a good place to start a realistic shortlist.

GPA on the US 4.0 Scale and Other Systems

The same formula works for any linear grading system - you only need the right Nmax and Nmin.

For a US-style 4.0 GPA, Nmax is 4.0 and the pass mark is usually 1.0 (a D). A 2.8 GPA then converts to 1 + 3 × (4.0 − 2.8) / (4.0 − 1.0) = 2.2, a “gut”. So when people ask whether a 2.8 GPA is good enough for Germany, the honest answer is: on a US 4.0 scale it is roughly a German 2.2, which meets many programmes’ requirements; a German grade of 2.8, on the other hand, is “befriedigend” and rules out programmes with a 2.5 minimum. Always state which scale you mean.

Letter-grade systems without a clear numerical scale, and grading systems that are not linear, are converted using the values in anabin or the university’s own table rather than this formula.

How Your Converted Grade Is Officially Determined

1

You apply with your original transcript

Upload or send your final transcripts and degree, with your APS certificate if your documents are Indian.

2

uni-assist or the university evaluates

For uni-assist member universities, uni-assist checks formal eligibility and states a converted grade in its evaluation or VPD.

3

The faculty applies its own rules

The programme’s admission committee compares the converted grade with its minimum or scoring scheme.

4

Only that number counts

Calculators - including ours - are for planning. The university’s figure is the one used for admission.

Using the wrong pass markNmin is your institution’s lowest passing grade, not 0 and not the lowest number on the scale. It can change your result by 0.3 or more.
️
Reading the German scale the wrong way roundA 'minimum of 2.5' means 2.5 or better (lower). A converted 2.7 does not meet it.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert my Indian CGPA to the German grading system?−

Use the modified Bavarian formula: German grade = 1 + 3 x (Nmax - Nd) / (Nmax - Nmin). On a 10-point scale with a 4.0 pass mark, an 8.0 CGPA converts to 2.0 and a 7.0 CGPA to 2.5.

What is the minimum CGPA for a Master's in Germany?+

There is no national minimum. Each programme sets its own rule: some require a converted 2.5 or 3.0, some rank applicants with the grade as one factor, and many mainly check that your Bachelor's matches the subject. A CGPA around 6.5-7.0 (about 2.5-2.8 on the German scale) can still find suitable programmes.

Is 7.5 CGPA good for Germany?+

A 7.5 CGPA converts to about 2.3 with a 4.0 pass mark or 2.5 with a 5.0 pass mark - a 'gut'. That meets the formal requirement of many Master's programmes, though highly competitive programmes may still prefer stronger grades or more relevant coursework.

Is a 2.8 GPA good in Germany?+

It depends on the scale. A 2.8 on the US 4.0 scale converts to roughly 2.2 in Germany, which is a good grade. A German grade of 2.8 is 'befriedigend' (satisfactory) and does not meet programmes that require 2.5 or better.

What value of Nmin do Indian universities use?+

It varies. Many 10-point CGPA systems use 4.0 as the minimum pass grade, some use 5.0 or another value, and percentage systems commonly use 35% or 40%. German universities and uni-assist take these values from the anabin database or your transcript.

Does uni-assist convert my grade?+

Yes. For universities that use uni-assist, the evaluation or VPD states your grade converted to the German scale, and that is the figure the university uses for admission.

Is 1.0 or 4.0 better in Germany?+

1.0 is the best possible grade; 4.0 is the lowest pass. Anything above 4.0 is a fail.
